Hi,
This is my first post in this forum, so I m sorry for the long message! :)

We are a small team of proffesionals exprerienced programmers (14 years each) and we are planning to develop an MMO game. For the moment I m doing a research on which engine to choose for the development of the MMO. After many days of research I m really confused since I really do not know which engine to choose! I finally came in a conclussion, between Irrlicht or C4. But which one is better?

Just to mention it, we are not afraid of having to writing any needed part like networking client/server part etc, but from the other hand we would strongly prefer to avoid rewriting needless code!

Also we would NOT like to develop our own engine from the scratch! We prefer to use a ready made one, but we do not have the budget for the Unreal.

So, pros and cons? Which one is better? smoothier movement, animation, better graphics? Physics? plugins?
Has anyone tried both? Any experiences?

Any other suggestion apart from Irrlicht or C4?

Thanks!

Athan

Hi
First of all irrlicht is mainly a 3d engine and it is very good doing that,But it is not oriented to games like c4engine so you must integrate libraries like physics, sound, etc… with it(this is relately easy),so IMHO c4engine is better for your needs specially that you are a small team so you will need help as much as possible (tools).

Hi,
thanks for your answer.

Yes but as I have seen Irrlicht have a big community and is compatible with many 3rd part plugins for physics and sound etc as you said.
But, which one is better from the graphics part (without that meaning lower FPS)?

Also what about paths? Is there a path editor or do I have to make one? Or is there another solution on this?

Thanks
Athan

Try them and decide for yourself which works best for you.

Thanks all of you.

Fullforce we are still under the design stage and we are thinking about our next steps. Thanks about your offer I ll really think about it and when is time will discuss it more seriously. But first there are so many things I need to do first (story, concept, design, analysis…) :)

Orge you said is as good (powerfull) as C4? I searched and there is no such an engine! Could you please give me the website?

Depending on your patience level, you might be interested in considering Realm Crafter (www.realmcrafter.com)). There are currently some limitations using this but it still offers quite a bit. You just have to have the patience to wait for the the engine/toolset to mature. In other words.. don’t plan on having a professional game complete and ready for the masses anytime too soon. Of course, if you are still under design stage then that shouldn’t be a problem.

Well no what I m looking for is a real 3D engine not just a Game machine (like realmcrafter is). Thanks anyway….

I wouldn’t call realmcrafter a Game machine. A Game machine would be more a “click-to-build” type of a tool. I still think I know what you meant though. But I thought you were interested in making an MMO. You have a lot of work ahead of you doing that starting with a barebones engine. You would even have a ton of work making your MMO with a Game machine.

Best of luck with your project.

You might want to consider using Truevision 3d.
