how do ppl make sounds for games anyway?

lets say, sounds like water or wind sounds. do they just record real water and wind, and then edit the soudns to make them sound good when looping?

and what about sounds which dont exist in rl? how do ppl make those?
like.. for example “warp”-sounds.

Im, no sound artist, but in case you get no better answers…

Yes, if possible, real sounds are collected, and then run through filters to perhaps soften or whatnot or changes are made to the beginning or end to make them repeat nicer. Just the same way textures are done.

Many sound people like to just record many weird things, and play with the frequencies in many weird ways. Sometimes you get something that sounds like something else in real life. Then this sound gets used for a laser blaster or whatnot. At this point, because the device doesnt really exist, we just associate that sound that some guy made with the fictional device and that is what we expect thereafter. So in order to find out most of the scifi sounds you will probably have to speak with a seasoned sound developer or use one from a sound collection.

You could just grab yourself a nice sound wave editor, start playing with the frequencies, and see what you can come up with though.

There are also these guys which make sounds for movies from
all kinds of strange things (once saw a documentary about it -
the job has a certain name can’t remember what it was though)..

They have all kinds of “trash” and from I dunno what - moving
a toothbrush over a toilet, changing the pitch or sth like that -
you get the perfect noise for whatever - very creative guys imo :)

The shooting-arrow noises for lord of the rings were made with
a real bow (I bet you never guessed that lol) - but they discovered
the coolest noises were made with the arrows which didn’t go where
they were supposed to but instead spinned of into the air.
They went to a stadion to get the ‘war cheers’ sound - asking
the people to make a booh-chaa noise and except the few idiots
who were shouting stupid things they got a few seconds of uninterupted
‘war cheering’ :)

Anyway, just watch the commentary for lord of the rings and audio -
maybe it’ll give you and idea

I don’t have much to add here - just the comment that the movie guys who do the sounds are called Foley artists (I hope that’s the right spelling).
