According to a report by The Inquirer, Microsoft is very close to releasing the next generation of DirectX, which will be called Windows Graphic Foundation (WGF). The interface will reunite DirectDraw components and Direct3D components which will help in developing a hardware-accelerated desktop environment. Although Windows Longhorn is almost 2 years away, the release should give hardware vendors enough time to bring WGF-compliant hardware. WGF will also feature Shader Model 4.0.
