Mobile Game Development Prepares Students to Create the Next Angry Birds
Game Development Essentials: Mobile Game Development, the long-awaited mobile entry in Delmar Cengage Learning’s best-selling Game Development Essentials series, is now available for purchase worldwide.
Mobile Game Development, a big-picture introduction to the fastest-growing segment in entertainment, offers students the latest on developing for the iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry platforms. Co-authored by industry veterans Kimberly Unger and Jeannie Novak, the book includes everything students need to create the next big hit in mobile gaming: detailed history, insight on popular tools, production tips, case studies, and clear and concise guidance on mobile game design, art, and programming.
"With mobile games, you can try anything, experiment with a new type of gameplay, kick the tires on an unusual type of storytelling or test out an all-new gameplay mechanic,” says Kimberly Unger, co-author and CEO of indie mobile studio Bushi-go. “We wanted Mobile Game Development to give students the kind of solid foundation they need to launch a career in an industry that is evolving and innovating on a weekly basis."
“In a world where console games cost $60 and the economy is tanking, mobile development has quickly become one of the last bastions for fresh ideas, new IP, and innovative gameplay,” says Jeannie Novak, co-author and series editor. “Mobile Game Development was written so that students can keep the momentum going -- pumping new blood into the industry and helping it survive disruptive technologies such as affordable smartphones, next-gen social games, and the advent of 4G wireless networks.”
The book also covers topics often ignored by game development textbooks, such as marketing and distribution, while including profiles and interviews of the industry’s most successful companies and developers—such as Headcase Games, Appy Entertainment, ZeniMax, Spacetime Studios, 2K Games, Digital Chocolate, and GameSalad.
"Mobile Game Development is a must-read guide that covers the subject matter from A to Z. This book charts mobile gaming from both development and business standpoints—where it has been, where it is now, and where it is all going next,” says Ron Alpert, co-founder of Headcase Games. “The book is packed with insight from a varied cross-section of the industry, providing thorough yet accessible information on all facets of the business for indie developers and large studios alike."
Educators interested in adopting the Game Development Essentials series should contact Erin DeAngelo at Erin.DeAngelo@cengage.com. The book is available online at Amazon, Cengage.com, and other online retailers--and it can be purchased both in print and in leading eBook formats.
