I often support indie devs even when their games are unfinished. Like the stock market, there’s a risk associated with that. Either they achieve what they set out to do or they fall short. I think the steam forum discussion helps better shed light on the matter. It looks as if they originally intended to make a complete game, but when the kickstarter campaign failed they switched buisness models to develop episodic content. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that was communicated well to their customers and now there’s a bit of backlash. It also appears as though the episodic model they switched to wasn’t properly developed. Perhaps there wasn’t enough time or the game was not originally designed for that when they decided to change business models.

I’m not against episodic content. TaleTell games does it all the time and I absolutely loved the way they did the Walking Dead series. It really sets the anticipation and suspense for the next instalment. Although I think what happened with Erik’s company is going to make it much more difficult to sell that pitch. First on the grounds that there’s upset customers and secondly, their only source of funding was pulled from the market due to the angry mob. And so like the game, the probability for a happy ending with the company is up in the air.

Yeah, that’s the trouble, one bad egg kind of spoils the whole batch. I don’t really like episodic content. I wait till they are all out and then buy them. I especially hate cliff hangers. I’m not as bad about it if they have some kind of resolution on each episode. Tell Tale is so story based that they are kind of in a class by themselves. I saw a little play through of the Walking Dead. Bit too much gore for me, but the cartoony characters helped take the edge off. I’m not sure what to make of those quick time event games. I’m too old fashioned I guess, and expect puzzles. I think I’d label it a choose your own adventure visual novel.
