Pretty cool looking controller. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have a lot easier time playing games with controllers because they’re more ergonomic, at least for me.

It’s good to see someone trying something new that isn’t a motion controller. I don’t know what it’s going to be like to play with trackpads instead of thumbsticks, but it’s an interesting idea. No doubt they’ll have some compatibility software to let you map keyboard/mouse actions to the controller, for games that don’t support it natively. But it sounds like it’ll be a fair amount of work for developers to really make good use of this, what with all the haptics and the touchscreen and stuff. It’s different enough from a standard console controller that it’ll need special attention.

Yeah, it will be too exclusive for anyone to use it’s possibilities much other than valve maybe. I think we can safely say it will be a mouse/keyboard replacement.

nintendo has been doing this for years with the ds. for people playing 1st person games, it will work but anything will work with those. your only shooting. maybe they will cash in on people who buy tech simply because its new. there is a lot of that happening now.

I don’t agree. Controllers aren’t very good for first person shooters. They’re better for everything else, especially vehicle games. I have one for my pc and use it for racing games when I play them. There’s a world of difference as far as I’m concerned. Racing games aren’t even fun on the keyboard. The little joysticks are all right, but I still don’t like always applying pressure when I’m not changing anything. I would buy it and use it on my pc if it wasn’t too expensive. I’m not big on tv sets. My 17 inch laptop does everything I need. It’s kind of Microsoft that is clueless about that kind of thing with kinect. Carmack calls it a zero button mouse, which is pretty accurate, so it’s just this goofy thing that will get used for a few dance games. Ideally they would have a controller for each hand with motion sensing but we’re apparently not ready for that for some reason.

It’s the old saying “use the right tool for the job”. FPS, Complex RPG, RTS, TBS - Keyboard + Mouse Driving - Wheel, Stick, and Pedals Flight/Space Sim - Joystick + Keyboard Everything Else - Gamepad

I’m not crazy about the gamepad, I’m more interested in seeing the box and whether or not it will be a Ouya contender or a Sony/MS contender.

Yeah, there are some people that already tested it at Gamasutra and they say it’s all right, but most don’t even like it better than a 360 controller. It might be something that is sort of in between. However, for playing sitting on a couch, it probably would be better than a keyboard for mouse type games. The problem would be if you are doing the social thing because then you want every edge you can get unless the game is pretty benign. I don’t play anything that involves competition because I get my butt kicked.

to fireside I was saying it will work with 1st person games. you dont need joysticks because your not doing that much. the keyboard was always a makeshift controller. but for the creator to say the controller needs to change is like saying. wear sandals instead of tennis when playing sports. because its time for a change. how is this any different from putting two touch pads on a keyboard. its no different at all. there trying to cash in on touch.

Ive said this before the joystick is what creates the connection to the game. with more than a few games they become unplayable without the joystick. take something like pacman you can play that without a joystick. but if pacman would have been introduced without a joystick. it would not have resonated with people the way it did

I’m very interested in trying this. I hate laptop trackpads, but this might be a huge improvement over the 3/4 inch analog stick.

Valve posted a video demonstrating a few games being played with the new controller - Portal 2, Counterstrike and Civ 5.

That looks pretty impressive to me. Definitely a great couch controller.
