I went into the office on Monday and kicked some butt to get a bug fixed,
Tuesday I went to London and had a meeting with Warner Brothers about one of their games I have just ported, damn good meeting.
Wednesday I was called into the office and told that the companies closing down and we are all redundant.
Now I am in the situation that I will be paid for the next two months, but I am not allowed to do any work.
Not allowed to work for anyone for two months. WTF am I going to do?
I never have a day off, now I have two months.
I was thinking about rewriting one of my games for another platform, but I cannot think of a good platform to code for.
Either I don’t think I will get any sales so I’m just doing it as a freeware game, or they don’t have the features I want, or I don’t have the development environment.
Someone help me out, give me some platform I can code for or a game that needs a coder for a while…… I NEED TO WORK….

You have few options:
Freelancing. Usualy at the begining is hard to find clients, but when you do, you start to work and earn some money without many people knowing about it.
Open-source projects. Games, 3D applications, or even some random projects that seem fun.
Write addons and plugins, you will get to know more people in this branch, and that is always good.
Collab with an artist. You can pick some passioned artists at any of the 3D forums, many of them are really looking for passioned programmers to write their code.
You will write, they will build up/rig models. This can becone a game or any cool app that people might use and even buy it.
Ofcourse getting into helping for an open-source project, or collaborating with some artists isn’t like to give profit at the begining, but might be fun.
Any of those will bring new people in your range and that is extremly helpfull in the long run. Don’t close yourself, relying on the money of these 2 months.
After the two months you can then apply to some companies, build a portfolio in Careers 2.0 (if you dont have one yet).
Just get into some fun project, boost your skills even more.
I would work on a freeware game, open source it so they don’t have any problem with it. Do something you can use in your portfolio. You should still clear it with them if you are working in the office or something. I’m sure you signed something so they basically own everything you do. They don’t want you working because they are paranoid you will steal trade secrets or do something malicious to the company.
Sorry to hear about that. I know how disrupting that kind of thing can be. Do things you felt like doing but never quite had the time, but also start working on a portfolio and a resume.
I think your better off porting something you already have done. but whatever platform you use. you will be forced to make it work by working around its limitations. there is no guaruntee of sales when you do something independent. a site like kickstarter may be of interest to you
There’s a pretty cool platform called vacation. The platform is designed to be easy to use and quite relaxing. The only bad thing about it is that it crashes in 2 weeks. Some people manage to keep it stable for longer, but your mileage may vary.
I’ve basically been told I’m not allowed to do any paid work for the next two months, but I’m not to come into the office after Monday.
On Monday we are supposed to see solicitors and sign documents, then at a later date hand in our laptops.
The problem is the original games I have written are based on technology that doesn’t exist on other platforms. So it’s either get involved in a FOS project or start something new.
There are things going on that I can’t talk about that mean I am confident that in two months I will have a job, so I really don’t need something to add to my portfolio.
I just need to code. I’m a junkie. Without something to keep my brain alive I descend into spending far too long in the pub, drinking far too much beer, spending far too much money. I want to end up in two months time healthy and with more money in my bank account than I would have had if I just carried on working for them.
If I don’t code that won’t be the case.
You could just work on some helper type things, like astar, ai, dialogue routines, etc. also, pick up a good coding book and go through some new things. Learn a 3d modeler like blender or whatever.
