And how many would be interested in social networking?

It happen I wasn’t able to find a twitter thread around here, so I though to have one to share with each others.

Great, I’ll follow everyone… there’s always time to choose what read and whatnot.

@devmasternet is official?

It doesn’t look updated from 2012!

I’m intrigued.

Why the hell would you twitter?

Most of the stuff I have seen is complete rubbish.

That’s why I prefer forums, but they seem to be going out now. I don’t get this social stuff.

It’s just a tool: take an example of a shovel… it may look useless until you don’t have to dig a hole.

and since not everyone may have corpses to hide underground, so it must not be of everyone like :P

Also internet is filled with mostly random/useless stuff… until you don’t realize how to use a search engine

A thing I do like in twitter is that sometime can “connect” you with the feeling of a mass of people. For example if there’s an earthquake around the world, and you search for the hashtag #earthquake it’s most unlikely you see message kind of:

just woke up from a nap and I’m hungry. whats for dinner

just woke up from a nap and I’m earthquake hungry. whats for dinner

1st night in a week that I’ve slept for more than 5 hours and through most of the earthquake. Woop!

and so go on…

Sure, plenty of bullshit on Twitter, agreed.

I suppose main good things about it are:

  • If you follow the right sort of people / accounts, on your timeline you can get the very latest, hottest news and updates on the stuff you are interested in - if you don’t have time to check you can Favourite and come back to it later
  • It’s yet another way to try and get exposure to your own stuff
  • It can be useful in a “forumy” way, for example if you twit something like “I am trying to do this and that with #modx” I bet you will get some people trying to help fairly quickly
  • If you are a privacy freak, the amount of personal / real data you have to share with Twitter and the public is minimal - in fact you could type bollocks in every single field and still enjoy a 100% legit, full featured Twitter experience
  • You can do some fun stuff with it if you want to - we used to have Nagios make twits about status, etc. of our servers and things like that:)

So yeah, if you can withstand some bullshit, ads, uber-marketers and spam direct messages it can be alright then.

I’m not big on social networks myself, don’t have Google+ for example. I never registered with Facebook either (not real account anyway:) and don’t intend to. But the idea of Twitter is acceptable.

I have enough distractions, skype goes off all times day and night, email is always on, mobile phone, wife, kids, …… ahhhhhh

skype is incredibly useful, you can share documents, talk with your mouth instead of your fingers, send files, even video conference. That is what I call a useful tool.

I have a contact group setup for technical queries, normally I can get feedback day or night, and I help people out whenever I am online. It just works.

twitter….. well I guess it’s just me, but I feel it’s useless clutter.

You’re not the only one Stainless. The classic SMS character limited messages are rather bland. Much of what I see on news community columns that reference tweets are just mind-numbingly ridiculous. I prefer RSS over twitter as they are more useful. Pictures + informative text summaries + hyperlinks to learn more if you desire. RSS feeds are also maintained by experienced people, so you cut out the rift-raft.
