I picked up Drakensang, the complete saga for about 12 dollars recently. A very good deal, I think. It’s 3 games and the artwork on the first title looks pretty good. It’s not super realistic, which I don’t care for. I’m just getting started with it, but what I like so far is that the AI is completely stupid. If you don’t order them to attack someone or something, they just stand there and let the guy who got attacked first do all the fighting and usually get killed right away. I think a lot of games are being over-programmed lately because we can, I guess. It makes game players more bystanders.

i actually like the idea of ai control, imagine an rts where every guy is a fps bot controlled by computer, and you order em around into tanks and things and they control themselves to some degree.

Yeah, I think that’s more of a high level management kind of thing, but I don’t get as involved when they make their own decisions and I can maybe change it if I feel like it, or maybe not. Personally, I like turn based game play the best but that’s kind of out of style now. I like intelligent enemy AI, but stupid friend AI, or even better, no AI at all for my team.

The way I look at is, there should be no fight that can be won without player input, otherwise, it’s not really a game, and if you are just healing and supplying needed items, that’s not really a game either, at least for me. There has to be a strategy element in every fight.

total annihilation (that dates wayyyy back) was the first rts to introduce semi self protecting units, and i didnt like star craft as much because the units didnt protect themselves as well. like you dont want to have to click every dang tower to help defend your base, for example.

Larger numbers of objects should have easy ways to call groups and select groups. I don’t mind simple defense, I just don’t like a game playing itself for me. At that point, it’s more a simulation like The Sims, where you are just a parent making sure their needs are met.
