land scan data

Im just about to make a terrain, and i got the idea i could stream it all uniquely and detailed, so that means i just have one giant unique height map + colours, if there was information on the net of a land scan (colours+heights) i could just wham it all in straight away… is there any resources on the net such as this?

Search for DEM I think it is, Digital Elevation Maps

There are areas of the world that are radar scanned down to very high resolutions.

Combining that with a satellite picture should be easy

NASA will most likely have what you’re looking for and for free (although it’s a pain to find and download). I’ve downloaded maps for Mars (500KM / pixel) and the moon (60m / pixel) from their MOLA and LOLA projects (they use radar instead of optical analysis). You will have to use optical satellite data in order to produce colour however. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that data freely distributed.

Look up “Blue Marble” from NASA, it’s relatively high-res imagery of the entire planet earth. -> This engine is using that data to render the entire planet, refined with fractal algorithms.
