I don’t necessarily agree with it. I was already tired of FPS after Doom. I did play Unreal all the way to the end, though. I never even finished the Doom demo. That was mainly because I had to make my screen view smaller and smaller in order to keep it from becoming a slide show. What I’ve noticed is role playing games have gone from me doing something to me managing my party. They basically do their own fighting now. Are you guys hungry? OK, lets get moving then. I think the next iteration for MMO’s will be you can just leave your player and come back now and then and decide what to do with the experience points he earned. Maybe that’s where they are already, I don’t play them. Everything is becoming more and more autonomous, and I don’t think it’s at all for the player. It’s because the programming is more interesting. You can pretty much sell anything to a gamer as long as it’s a little bit different than the other 1000 games he played.

I like fps, its the most challenging game to make cause everything gets viewed from so close up, even third person isnt as bad.

My favorite fps was call of duty 4, that game scared the shit out of me! I was literally in shell shock, really felt like I was in the war. :)
I get my ass totally kicked tho… oc… that game is so darn hard.

but back to id… rage looks amazing, if they did quake again it would be the rage engine, to tell you the truth, I actually like how id make their games, their ai is fine, graphics are most important for setting the “ambience” of the game, and rage has a wicked ambience. I actually emulate them as best I can when I make my own demos.

Just ive got nothing to complain about, id really rock, i love their games, but not to say they are the only company bringing out good games, theres quite a few of them. looking at the e3 videos on youtube is really fun.

Haha. Old skool 4 life. I’ve played interesting games over the years, but nothing ever tops the fun I had with Quake and TF.

Anyway, I don’t think new PC games are that bad. When I play shooters nowadays, it’s for the single player. I don’t consider the games dumbed down, but maybe I haven’t bought a lemon yet.

Well, it’s about entertainment right. It’s just like the movies. Some are successful at trilogies while others don’t even make the first cut. People don’t mind remakes, so long as they’re something of value from it.

I found the movie most fitting :)

I agree that the ambience should fit the game, however you don’t need super realistic gfx for that. E.g. a break out clone would not be interesting to play when the gfx were photo realistic. The same would be true for a jump and run game. Mario Brothers with realistic gfx would not fit. Sometimes less is more. So, a quake clone with the rage engine might be an overkill and ruin the game fun. Lots of players even downgrade the gfx for quake so they get more visibility about what’s going on in the fast paced gameplay.

Amen :)@TheNut

Same here. I tend to prefer single players. However, I normaly get annoyed with boss battles. It’s just the same thing over and over again. It would be cool if there were an alternative to get highlights in a game without having to resort to boss battles. Maybe better AI for some opponents will to the trick. Not sure about a viable alternative though… I liked the single player for Dark Messiah a lot. Too bad there wont be a successor for that game.

I second that! Never had more multiplayer fun with an fps then with Quake 1 (deathmatch) and Unreal Tournament 1 (ctf). And the best single player fps imho is… Spear of Destiny (yep!;)

I think if Quake was made today it wouldn’t be as bs as the vid suggests - it points out some issues with (not all) todays games though.
