Okay so I have been doing a large amount of research and am trying to
find the best game engine for my situation. I am currently working on
the design of a first person shooter and need an engine that handles
this genre well. However, in my research I’ve seen many engines that
have amazing graphical capability yet that is not the main thing I am
looking for (it is still important though). Scripting and programming
must be well documented and not just a side feature, as it is game play
that makes a great game.
My main competitors at the moment are the Unreal Development Kit, C4,
Esenthel Engine and DX Studio.
Any help as to answering these questions or leading me in the right
direction would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and additional information to help:
I have a basic Understanding of C++ - Can figure most things out if
The engine must be stable and have at least decent documentation and a
Cost must be under $300.
The engine must have a relatively cheap commercial license.
Must support Dx10 or Dx11.
Thanks in advance guys!
well if it MUST support DX than C4 is out of the question for you, it is
openGL. Also esenthel won’t give you much flexibility unless you spend
at least 750. But these are just simple facts about the engine you
should already know if you’ve been researching them.
I meant to say if it does support Directx, it can’t be like only 9. And
why do you say for Esenthel you must spend $750?
If you are a lone developer, I would say UDK is the best option for an
FPS. There’s nothing wrong with any of the other engines you mentioned
and they will all permit you to make a good game. One thing you want to
check is that you can get the models you have chosen into the game. I
haven’t used UDK, though. It comes with Speedtree which will help with
outdoor environments, and it’s used for a lot of professional games. The
license allows you to make a fair amount of money if you do try to sell
a game before they start charging. If you are considering a web engine,
then Unity is pretty interesting. Check out their demo’s. There is also
a fps multiplayer on Kongregate.
Okay thanks a lot! I would like to get other people’s opinions too on
this so if you can help please do!
