2D engines

Hey there, I’ve been spriting since late 1999 and I’m looking for a good 2d game engine, basically I only want to create Rpg’s, I’ve looked around but I haven’t found anything, any recommendations?

What platform, programming language, etc?

look up RPGMAKER 2007, it makes japanese style rpgs, if you like that sorta thing,
im not sure what its like now, each new version they put a new spin on it.
it comes with alot of graphics with it, but you can make your own little
artform if your planning on doing all the graphics yourself.

But making your game act different from other peoples is tricky, you sorta
have to bend the rules of the game with what they give you, sorta like making
a doom 1 mod.

monjardin: I was thinking starting out with a C# like language or python will do just fine, I use Windows XP. I want to be able to have freedom.. I’ve used Rm2k3(rpg maker 2003) and Rm2k for 6 years and Game maker for 2 years so I’m not new to game development(well.. not prof but in the sense).

vbGORE is an open source, free MMORPG engine developed in Visual Basic 6 that has been in heavy development for over a year. It supports multiple connections with great speed with support over as many servers as you want. The server offers a lot of security from countless lines of packet integrity checking to streaming packet encryption, using a MySQL database to hold information. The client uses DirectX 8 to offer powerful 2d graphic support and manipulation with effects from alphablending, lighting and rotations to even a custom particle engine.

I heard Ika used python but whats better, Ika or Pygame?

I’ve never heard of Ika, but PyGame is an API wrapper for the Simple Directmedia Layer for Python. You’ll have to code your game pretty much from scratch with it but it gets the job done well.

A quick google search for Ika reveals that it is a full-fledged RPG engine. You won’t have to code as much but if you do you’ll likely get better results.

PyGame will work on Linux and Mac without modification if written correctly. I’m not so sure about Ika.

Is a freeware gamer system with minimal programming needed that is ment for 2D gfx and sprit driven animations…. it is mainly ment for making sierra game style adventure games like Kings Quest and Space Quest and stuff.

Also there is a paid version called

It is for the same thing but a little more advanced (thus the cost) and is more for myst style games… has a lot of programming room for puzzles and stuff…. (still minimal programming needed)

Well for MMO’s theres Eclipse Engine, XRealms Engine, vbCORE

Non-MMO’s theres GameMaker, RPG Maker, RPG Toolkit.

All I really know.
