The State of Linux Graphics

Jon Smirl has written an article that provides an overview of the X Server as well as graphics in Linux. Topics include the current X server, framebuffer, Xgl, graphics drivers, using the GPU. The author attempted to create the Xegl display server, a hardware-accelerated graphics layer for the X server, but because of difficulties, the project was abandoned. In his article, he proposes a new display server design that can solve a lot of the issues the current design faces.
