ATI Multi-Threading Patent

Beyond3D has a report on a recent patent by ATI regarding a multi-threaded graphics command queuing system in which a hardware unit is responsible for distributing the specific command from each of the vertex and pixel shader command between the available shader processing unit types. This is an indication that ATI is heading towards a unified shader architecture in the future where the vertex and pixel shaders are combined at the hardware level. WGF 2.0 (aka DirectX 10) has already specified a unified shader language for both vertex and pixel shaders, which ATI and NVIDIA are preparing for. Read the report for more details and analysis about the patent.
