Windows Longhorn to ship in 2006

Microsoft officially announced the launch of the next version of Windows to take place in 2006. To meet this release date, they decided to remove their database driven file system (WinFS) which will eventually be available after the product has shipped.

On a side note, programmers will be able to benefit from the new graphic system while still retaining backward compatibility with previous versions of Windows through the new WinFX API.
