Amazon just launched a new type of instance for its EC2 cloud computing platform that is designed for applications that require 3D graphics capabilities. This is a pretty interesting move and is a step towards moving GPU functionality to the cloud. Similar to how we’ve seen desktop-based applications gradually move towards the cloud, I think we’ll start seeing GPU-based applications, including games, running completely on the cloud. Our local machines are slowly becoming dumb terminals. The bottleneck so far is network bandwidth, but it’s constantly improving.
