Game Studies Program Expands, New Acadmic Director at The Art Institute of California

The Art Institute of California – San Francisco ( has expanded its Game Art and Design degree program by hiring Marc Sherrod as its new full-time Academic Director. Sherrod’s hiring comes amid continued growth in the school’s game-related degree programs, designed to provide entry-level talent for the $10.3 billion computer and video game industry.

Sherrod will be involved in curriculum and faculty development, coordination of the school’s Program Advisory Committee from the game industry, student guidance and other aspects of game education at the school.

Sherrod’s background includes experience with game development companies and publishers in the United States and Japan. He has nearly 10 years of production and management experience in the interactive entertainment industry, and has worked extensively as a producer with artists, designers and engineers on a variety of titles and platforms. Most recently, Sherrod was a Senior Producer with The 3DO Company in Redwood City, Calif., and previously worked as an Assistant Producer with 989 Studios (SONY) in Foster City, Calif. Sherrod’s background also includes management positions in the production and development department at Sega Enterprises, Ltd. in Tokyo where he worked closely with development teams and on the localization of numerous titles. He holds a Master of Arts degree from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University.

"His real-world experience will give our students additional perspective as they progress in their studies and into their careers."

The Art Institute of California – San Francisco also recently announced a new Game Research Lab at its facilities for use by students in its Game Art & Design and Visual & Game Programming programs. The lab features gaming consoles, game titles and career resources for students studying various aspects of game art, design and programming.

Students in the Game Art & Design program start out by studying color theory, drawing, sculpture and other art fundamentals, then take courses in 3-D modeling, animation, texture mapping, 3-D character rigging, storytelling, motion and lighting, game prototyping and other aspects of character design and game level design. The Visual & Game Programming degree combines traditional animation skills with technical skills. After training in the foundations of art and design, students enter into the more technical areas of programming for 3-D animation, enabling them to enter the world of shading development, motion capture management and pipeline streamlining. Students learn the essential skills to effectively solve technical problems to bridge between the technical programmer and the creative artist. In order to develop a well-rounded knowledge base useful in creative careers, students in each program also take general education courses in mathematics, social sciences, psychology, art history, philosophy and the humanities.

Mary Clarke-Miller, former Academic Director for Game Art & Design, also will continue at the school as Academic Director to focus on the expansion of its Visual & Game Programming and Media Arts & Animation degrees.
