Do you think that the hardware failure could not only cause the damage that was initially realized, that is a few people leaving. Do you think that it could stop new potential traffic from coming due to the forums looking some like a ghost town? Will it hurt our reputation as a professional site that we didn't have a back up for nearly a month? I would like to hear your predictions and opinions on these questions.

My is that it could cause damage for about a month while we get our forums back to their previous state. After that I think we will get the same things that we had before the crash.

There's not even any point in trying to deny the troubles GDNet has experienced in the past few years. In fact, we even had a small server hiccup earlier this morning. heck at one point last year we were down for nearly a week. Compared to us this site has been pretty rock solid.(I swing by here at least once a day so I do know). Things happen, and hardware crashes are an unfortunate part of life. The backup length is unfortunate, but not catastrophic.

All in all, I don't forsee any horrible exodus or shaken confidence among the people who frequent these forums and the site in general. This wasn't that big of an issue in my eyes, coming from all the crap we've had to deal with over at GDNet :P

Ooh hey, thx for the front page love

Also the server backup span was not even in our hands, since the server is not run by us directly. I don't think there is a way for us to backup the database even if we wanted to...
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

Really!? So that means this might well happen again, and we could lose another month of posts?

As far as I understand it we are at the hands of the server admins on this, yes. But maybe Dia can elaborate on this...

No, actually we do have control over the server; so we can make backups and anything else we would need. This time, we need to make sure that daily backups are made :D

A better procedure might be to print threads to PDF :ninja:
