Although my own software rendering engine is blatantly slow and buggy, I'm still somewhat interested on this topic, because with newer CPUs it runs at acceptable framerates...
One thing that I like in software rendering is that (at least for me) it is far more intuitive to program, and offers more liberty -- like, I can add any rendering effect I wish, without caring about hardware support (so what, my crappy sw engine has bilinear, blur, bloom and fake HDR on ANY PC, heheheh).
After reading an interview with Tim Sweeney talking about a possible return of software rendering, and seeing that SwiftShader is doing quite an amazing job, I am even considering the possibility of rewriting that sw engine, because I love to see it running on PCs without any (or with sucky) hardware acceleration.
Any additional thoughts?
