Hi, I was just wondering, I have been searching around the internet looking for a good engine to suit my needs for about a week now and haven't been able to come up with many good results.(I have found a few but they haven't entirely filled my needs) The game I am wanting to design is to be a destruction derby style game with weapons on the cars(controllable while driving) and big open arenas, online fast paced gameplay for up to 16 players and changeable view between 3rd person and 1st person. The engine would need support for vehicle physics. It would also need to be able to generate crashes, dents and explosions etc, have inbuilt dynamic lighting, but just as importantly a good/fast system for online gameplay. I have thought about using CryENGINE2 which seems to be almost perfectly suited to my needs, except for the high price tag. If you know of an engine that does not cost thousands of dollars and would be suited to these needs, or if you have any suggestions please tell me as it would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, here's the story. You have a list of fairly generic feature requirements, combined with a quite specific kind of gameplay. It's very unlikely there's already an indie engine that can become a destruction derby game right out of the box. There are however engines that support the generic features you mentiond, which you can use to create the gameplay you need. This will require some work (programming), and possibly some hacking around in the engine to add specific features you need. That's just how it is.
There is basically a short list of indie engines that get mentioned every time someone posts one of these "which engine" threads, and they really don't vary much depending on the person's specific requirements, for similar reaons to those I stated above. So, I'm going to direct you to all those other threads. Read a few of them and you'll get a good sense of what the options are for indie development.
