Now I've got a complete, detailed idea of the whole concept, I want to figure out how I'm going to go about implementing all of it. I'm just doing it as a hobby, so it doesn't matter that much to me how long it takes, I just want to learn how to do everything required on my own. The closest thing to a game engine I've really worked with before was making games in RPG Maker XP using RGSS (their own modified version of Ruby), although right now I'm more comfortable programming in C/C++. I don't have too much experience building games from the ground up but eh, I figure the best way to learn is by trying
For something like this (simple 3D with 2D sprites, isometric perspective, tile based, no complex fancy shading or effects), what would be the best engine to use? Are there any people normally use for these kinds of games? I've tried looking on my own but there are so many options available that I don't really know where to start. Thanks in advance for any replies!
