Hello,
I have recently begun a project to develop an MMORPG based on an RPG called "The Artifact." (visit www.theartifact.net). I am currently studying C++, Visual Basic, and becoming proficient in using 3ds Max 9. While learning programming languages is not a problem for me, I still need help in learning how to actually begin this project. The storyline is already set, with locations, characters, people, professions etc.
My main issue right now is finding out where to begin, as I have said. I'm not sure how large my programming team should be, I don't know of all the tools I'll need, and I don't know exactly how to begin programming a graphics engine. My project will take several years, I'm sure, so right now I'm simply learning how to do everything. If anyone has any detailed and extensive information on how to proceed with this, your help would greatly be appreciated. Also any good books and tutorials you could show me would also really help. Thank you very much, and I am looking forward to being a member of these forums!

To summarize: you have no experience with programming or modeling (or texturing, animation, 3d computer graphics, networking, databases, software design, ...) , and you are going to do the same companies with large funds and large teams of many experienced people do. Good luck!
By the way, I ordered recently "nuclear energy for dummies", and I'm going to build a nuclear power plant, because of rumors of global warming, and I need help too, anyone?

That was funny, but it is true.
Pick me! I have 'experience' in nuclear power plants.

I have no experience with meta-materials. Lets all stop light!
I do have to admit that the summarization is fitting. Try starting smaller, like pong, before you even try and spell MMO. Or take a preexisting game and create modifications for it. larger audience, smaller work load (unless you go big, like TOTF for tes4).
Oh, and plot sounds more professional the storyline, just to note.

People interested in making MMORPGs with no experience are always welcome at MMORPG Maker.
Whenever people start working with MMORPG engines, and 3d models, and decide they need to become master C++ programmers to really make something unique, I send them to Devmaster.

Your jokes were in poor taste...probably because you did not get my message clearly. Of course its going to take a VERY long time before I am ready for a huge MMO. I understand if you found it annoying that some new guy who knows nothing just appears and declares that they are making a huge project. I meant no disrespect to you more experienced programmers. I simply asked where to begin. Everyone starts somewhere. Now, I have my plot ready (sorry if I offended with "storyline"), so to be more clear, now that I have the plot, what should I be doing with it next? What should I be learning? How many people should I bring into a team? If it is necessary to start small and work my way up, what should I learn to create smaller games? I'm already learning a few things currently as I mentioned before.

Start studying C/C++, and develop indie games, like side scrollers, arcade puzzle, beat'em up, 2D shooters, etc. MMORPG are way out of your league.
Windows XP SP3, Ubuntu 9.10, Pentium Celeron D 2.6 GHz, 2 MB RAM, ACER LCD monitor, Nvidia GeForce 6200, Lambda Lexicon USB audio interface.

Tthink of my un-tasteful (albeit true, I have no clue about meta-materials) joke as such: What do you know how to work with?
Also, try the fellowship of the newb; a gathering of those who are trying to figure stuff out in general. It might be a place to start, its where I am.
If you want, give me a run-by of the plot via pm; everything matters.
It might be a good idea to try the idea within a smaller medium before going full scale. For my Cypher project; it is being formed as a mod of scorched3d. To stress test it per-say. To work the idea and composition in more forms than just writing it; and the fact that I truly have no clue about code, I am still a mere scribe as of yet.
Oh, and the link to your site didn't work, that might of drawn some of the flak from others along with I; s3d has been hit up with spambots recently, who knows what has happened here before.

Well, I don't think Sloan was joking by saying you should start with something like pong. It does require tons of patience and experience to succeed at making a game. If you start small, then you will gain the experience of making a game from start to finish, be able to learn a few lessons from it, and move on... If you immediately start with a huge project, you may never complete it.
...You may want to change nickname to... I don't know, "TheArtifact", if that's available... People will refer to you as the "lead programmer" once you've proved you deserve the title
