hey all this is a probably nooby question but,
how do i texture terrain? i created a heightmap, but the only way i can skin it is to make a large skinned overhead texture or open it in radiant and blend te textures.

Google for texture splatting. It's a useful technique for terrain texturing.

For texturing models you need to UV map them, then texture the UV's into a paint program like Photoshop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro.

I use BodyPaint or DeepPaint for painting directly on the models. Thats by choice. There tons of Videos out there that'll show you that, I dunno, check YouTube, 3D Buzz, Poop In Mouth. Google is your Friend :yes:

For terrain I use 3D World Studio which paints directly on the terrain ---> with your own scanned textures or from .jpg get the demo and test it out.

btw, why do some people say "skinning" when they mean texturing?
