I posted a news item about this as well, but since there seems to be several hundred items in the queue, processing may be a bit slow.. =)
Anyway. TMDCX, the 10th pseudoannual text mode demo competition is on. Deadline 12.12.2007. Go grab the invitation demo from http://taat.fi/tmdc/ and enter the competition to win cool bunch of indie games!
The site also includes rules, links to resources, all the earlier years' entries, and a nifty flier you can print out to spread the word further.

Cool, I love this competition. Once it made me even write my first text mode thing (a simple roto zoom), and I came to the conclusion that it isn't easy at all. Good luck to the participants :)

I saw the contest demo and it's pretty damn good. It's not even part of the contest and already I can't beat something like that, haha. Sol, are you entering?

As for beating, you never know what you can end up with if you don't try. I knew beforehand that I only have a few hours to do that one, and I think it came out pretty well - on the other hand, I've had practise.

Hey, I think I'm going to try to enter this here compo. I've done a bunch of graphics programing but never anything in text mode. Can anyone recommend any libraries or tools that can help to make a sick demo? Thanks.
Good luck everyone.

There's links on the tmdc site to the most important ones, but to recap, there are three main publicly available "text more dendering" libraries:
- AALib, the ascii art library, is probably the most famous and oldest
- LibCaCa, the colorful ascii art library, is the "state of the art" when it comes to publicly available ones (there are some better renderers but they haven't been released), and finally
- TextFX, my own library which is probably easiest to comprehend if you want to roll your own and want to use something as a reference. (This is also the most used one of the three, for good or bad).
