Hello everyone,

All my life i wanted to make an mmo game of my own, at least a simple one that me and my friends can play and have a good time.
I have started learning c++ because i've heard that it is the most used language on making games.
So now I can say that im able to use C++.
What i need is, a tutorial, a site or something that can help me learn how to make games.
Can I have your help?

Thanks for now,
lefti.

www.aaroncox.net

This shows you how to use SDL to write 2D games. Excellent tutorials.
Once you are good making 2D games, move up to 3D and check out some DirectX/OpenGL stuff. Try googling them.

1. http://cone3d.gamedev.net/

2. My suggestion is to listen to Gardon and don't move up to 3d until after you've learned 2d. 3d will more than double the amount of effort you have to go into to finish your game.

lefti, 3D is how you show your game on the screen. Nothing more. The game itself doesn't consist of just a dimension. It's total logic. Logic is developed through experience. Experience is developed by doing something.

Try programming a basic Breakout clone, and you'll see what I mean. You'll fail your first time.

A MMO thread that sounds sincere without being totally insane reagarding the posters expectations :) That's kind of rare.

Why don't you look into MUDs ? It allows you to play with the game mechanics of MMos without getting knee deep imto graphics code. It's a great way to get your hands dirty with the networking side of MMos without worrying too much about the resource constraints introduced by graphical games.
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

Lefti, we gave you more than enough information. We've helped you enough. It's not how you ask, it's just that there is nothing more to give.

Go to the website I mentioned. Try programming 2D. If you can't get your compiler to work with basic SDL, what makes you think you can get a client/server setup?

THERE IS NO TUTS ON HOW TO MAKE A MMO! INDUSTRY DESIGNS THEM ITSELF BASED ON EXPERIENCE.

Some people just don't get it.

Read this article in the DevMaster Wiki. If you still want to make an MMORPG, consider that the engines designed for that purpose cost hundreds of dollars so you'd better plan on getting a summer job to be able to pay those other programmers to do your dirty work for you.

I understand there are language barriers for many people and that learning a Germanic Language such as English when your mother tongue is not Germanic is diffucult.

I, for one, accept your apology. I just hope that the article I linked in my previous post helps you to understand what's involved in developing games. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Yes, there are no Tutorials out there, but don't be so hard on him Gardon. He showed the desire to learn, what's wrong with that? With dedication and talent you can achieve almost anything. My team for example, intend to create a MOO, even if we have no idea from where to start. We had no idea how to create a RTS game before and we did it eventually. You can't let yourself discouraged by missing information... Remember that all begins with a small step, the necessary step...

I'm trying lefti... Actually this would be my first. I would just have to wait and see what will come out of it. After all, it's a nice job to create games, do what you like, but you also have to eat, don't you?

Anyways, good luck with your learning and don't give up. There's still hope!

hey lefti, the best way if you want to make mmo if to join a small team or project making a mmo, get the experience off that and make your own that ways, you can always try tuts but they are not as effective as watching people who know the stuff do it and you helping them in whatever way you can? but the guys are right in saying 3d stuff is harder than 2d stuff, and its always best to start small and work you way up.

If you have the money, then try some books from amazon.com. They have a lot of valuable resources and I have about $200 worth of books on my shelves. It made a difference for me. It is currently helping me make a 3D RPG for my first game design project. Surprisingly, I'm quite successful so far =)

Educate yourself as much as you can. Other than programming materials, you should be learning the basics of math and physics.
