There were a bunch of people on this forum posting about creating their own MMORPGs and they were all banned. Why is this?

I think anyone uttering the word "MMORPG" without some established gamedevelopment credit should be banned B).

Seriously though, what are you talking about? Do you have any links? Or has it got to do with the private message spamming of a certain individual?

If by banning you mean that their threads have been deleted, then it is because those kinds of questions tend to bring down the forum quality and are not desired. Thread deletion is an interim solution; there is an ongoing discussion about the best way to deal with this sort of thing in this thread and this one. However, as far as I know no one has been actually banned - their accounts have not been locked out and they are still able to post.

There isnt one perfect solution to how to launch an MMORPG, and various people have differing opinions about how to do it. You can make a guide about how one person does it successfully, but a different type of game will equire a different approach. Such as a graphical game requires finding a good engine, building character models, etc... and a text-based game just requires writing and making additional features work.

For different games there are different ways of attracting help, developing it, and attracting players once it's finished. One single 'MMORPG building guide' is not going to cover everything, and sure the answers might be somewhere on the internet but the internet is a big place and even google doesn't always have the answer.

I was at this stage once too, and I ended up building the entire game myself and forging my own strategy. I read your guide and its not very helpful.

Anyways its your forum, and up to you to decide what is 'quality conversations'. That's not what I was really bothered with, but the fact a few of these people have been banned that I have noticed. People like Monster2007. I lost track of the list but there were a few others.

So why were these people banned? Is there something behind the scenes I dont know about?

It seems Monster2007 was given a temporary ban because of repeatedly posting with "how do you make a mmorpg" type questions.

In my opinion I hope everyone shoots me, hell i dont own this forum even
though forums are so easy to write anyway, why dont i write one myself.
AZOUNDRIA!
I agree, an MMORPG isnt that hard to write, its only good graphics that get
in the way, other than that its just crossing an RPG with a MUD, and i dont
see what the big difficulty is.

Sure, these people asking to make one might have their minds on making a
really huge MMORPG, but something like ETERNAL LANDS, which you have a
desemination of it here, would be fairly simple to write and make and do art
for, for a lot of us!

So there, ban me...

Do you think making an fps or rts is any easier? Everyone knows as long as
super graphics isnt involved you can have a go at anything, fairly successfully
in a MODEST WAY.

Just because it doesnt have million dollar cinematics coming with it, doesnt mean
its not a graphical gathering of role players of 100-300 people.

And we should be allowed to speak about it!

You fail to see the point. It's not about making MMORPGs that makes gamedevelopment a difficult task. RTS and FPS games are not different at all, and nobody's suggesting otherwise. The fact is, however, that MMORPGs are popular these days, which is why you see so many topics about people thinking they can make their MMORPG the next best thing since sliced bread.

Today, it's MMORPGs. A couple of years ago, it was FPS games (and before that there was nothing as gamedevelopment forums weren't that crowded and not every idiot had an internet connection). In a few years from now, it will probably about multiplayer freeroam games (such as GTA) or something. The type of game doesn't matter, there will always be idiots who think they can accomplish the difficult task of creating a game just like that.

Ok, I will call you on this one. I give you 2 years. Come back here in 2 years, and display your MMORPG to us, and I think everyone here would eat their words.

Sure, feel free to speak about it. Also, feel free to be wrong and to be called on superfluous comments.

The fact is, game development is hard. Everything from acquiring assets, marketing, team acquisition, and coding is difficult and time consuming. If anyone thinks it is simply busy work, then they have a big disappointment coming to them.
