Ok, I have been at some hardcore stuff lately, but how about something fun.

How would yall define the mindset/personality of gamers that play:

RTS
MMORPG
FPS
Fantasy offline RPG

Since I only play RTS, I only know my breed.
I say we love to think we are the masterminds of the gaming community
We are idealistic control freaks
Only enjoy gaming when there is a human opponent
Love complicated puzzles and hate to be wrong, but are fascinated when we are wrong. (must understand why) btw I’m a physics major lol

I think a lot of gamers approach online play as, “I’m going to beat this **** I’m playing against!” At least for me, my approach is, I’m going to beat this army with my army, and not so much about who I’m playing against.

this should be a fun one,
Chad

I think those genres have significant overlap and this is not going to be something you can put your finger. I myself am an RPG fan. But RPGs also have an element of strategy in them, some more then others.

Maybe RPG people are the ones that want more escape from teh real-world then people playing other genres. FPSs could be the same thing because I *hear* that recent FPSs have some tight story lines attached to them.

But all the stuff you said about RTS games apply equally to RPG gamers I think:
- love to think, control freaks (human oopponent comes into MMORPG as well - more so then RTS)
- Where'd you get the complex puzzles (that'd apply more to RPGs)

FPS all the way!

Or at least it should be first person... I also like first person space stuff such as Freelancer... Ok, I also like jump'n run as well as fighter games like tekken.

However, I do need an action element. Something witch requires reaction rather than planing. If it goes beyond the tactics needed in a FPS, I guess my attention span is too short :)

Oh and I'd say I am not the average player. It's not very important to me to win. What I enjoy is a good gameplay. If that's ok, I don't care if I loose. :)

Not sure in witch breed you'd put me

My mindset is I want to play a game that's fun for me. As long as the game I'm playing has me enjoying it then I don't really care why I'm playing it, just that it's fun. I find some genres more fun than others.

I like 3rd person action/adventure above all others because they seem to usually have the best combinations of gameplay/storyline that I like. RPG's and FPS's follow second and puzzle type games (ala Myst or casual games like Bejeweled) come in last. Strategey, simulation, and sports don't really come into play at where my specific tastes are concerned (there have been very few that I actually enjoyed, I stopped playing Madden because it's starting to become too bogged down in realism and overcrowded with options).

I have completely enjoyed games that bombed in retail, and have hated/despised games that everyone else went nuts and ga ga over (like Half-Life and Halo). What kind of mindset does that put me in? Thinker? Adrenaline Junkie? Don't know, don't care. I play to have fun and as long as I'm having fun, I'm gonna keep playing.

I like all games that I deem good, fun or whatever else. I am developing an RTS, but I also fork out $20 a month for MMORPGs, and have done for ages, I play a bunch of FPSs and I love RPGs. But where are the other options, where are the platformers, adventure games and everything else. They rock too!

So basically, give me anything of Quality, and I'll like it.

I'm not good with abbreviations so I'm not sure what are are talking about, but I like first person games, and sports games. Especially the Maddens and the Hot Shots Golf.

Has anyone played Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit in Europe)? It purports to be a modern-day third-person adventure game.

FPS gamers like to spend money on things they don't really need to improve (or worsen) their gaming reputation in some way (Microphones for trash-talking, mod chips, Plasma TVs, turbo gamepads, $100+ gaming keyboards, gigantic LCD monitors, physics cards, Master Chief and Covenant action figures, liquid cooling systems to overclock their processor further, etc.)

I wonder what kind of people you konw

As an FPS enthusiast I konw some other FPS player of course. Judging by their habits (and mine) I can't follow your list.

Microphones for trash-talking:
Ok, some use that. However, they use skype and not the build in stuff from games. Their microphones are somewhere around 20 bugs. So, not much.

$100+ gaming keyboards:
I have never seen someone buy such a beast. The cheapest keyboards form logitech are usually the best for gameing (~30 bugs). Mine is about 3 Years and hase no flaws.

gigantic LCD monitors:
So not true. The adicted gamer avoids LCD. Normal monitors have a better response time. I only know one who bought a LCD. 1280x1024 in a 17'' seams quite normal to me and it was at a reasonable price.

I think your statement only applies to some gamer kiddies whos parents pay for everything but not to the mass and not for the average FPS player.

I like them all, but in cycles. I will play one type of game, and then play the heck out of that type, then burn out on it, sometimes saying that I'm thru with that sort of game, and will not likely play it again.

Then, I'll find a game of that type that is excellent, start playing that type of game again, and play a bunch more like it.

I'm more of a socializer than anything else, so I do like online games the most, and tend to gravitate toward those, regardless of type. For example, I like playing MMORPGs and grouping with a good party to accomplish quests.

However, I'm just as satisfied playing Call of Duty 2, and killing everyone in site in FFA deathmatch. Either way you can chat while you are dead and waiting to respawn.

I dislike complicated puzzles. I an solve them, but I don't want to. It's just not somethign I enjoy. In Half Life 2, for example, I found the physics puzzles a bit novel for the first 1/4 of the game, but after that I quickly tired of them. They just got in the way of blowing things up, IMHO, and the game would have been better with far fewer of the puzzles.

I'm easy going, so trash talking has little or no effect on me. It's just a game, so I'm not going to scream and slam down the keyboard, or anything like that. If you kill me in head to head play, good for you. I'll go get a soda, and kill you later.

When it comes to RTS games, I'm a builder and a defender. I don't usually go for the blitz. I enjoy building all the troop, and all the buildings. In fact, I'd rather do that than win quickly. It's more fun to build an army that's either overwhelming in numbers, or in technology, then march in and destroy everythign in sight.

Agreed. I recently wanted to buy a new headset, too. But then I found out that all but the cheapest one include an usb-to-sound adapter which would (at least for most current games) deactivate the built-in sound adapter, because only one can be active at a time. That's not really an option since it makes a big difference wheter I play with a headphone or my big 7 channel stereo amplifier... So I stayed with my old-school hand microphone

So true. And with those 30 bucks you can buy three keyboards if one gets broken accidentally (aka smashed to the floor).

Oh yes. It seems I'm just running into a problem on this one. My 14(!) year old 19" CRT (1280x1024, 60Hz) I currently use for some fast FPS (Counterstrike and such) and for watching TV is probably going to die soon. Altough LCDs have improved a lot in the last years, I doubt there is one that can surpass that old CRTs contrast and color capabilities. (Not to speak of response time, which is a nonexistent problem with CRT screens).
The problem is: There's almost no CRT screens available any more! I really hope I'll find a proper replacement for that screen once it is due. Actually I saw one model, 22", for less than 500bucks. Really cheap, actually. But how long will the offer last.... I don't know.

I saw you live in swiss too. About your monitor problem, you might want to check out www.stegcomputer.com (check out the online shop). Look for the samsung LCD monitors. The one my friend bought is a samsung too. They are very promissing. Ok, contrast and color capabilities are not like a CRT but they are really good. And the response times go as less as 2ms! My friend has 4ms gray to gray and it's sufficient except in quake witch is very fast. There you actually see the difference.

I already own a quite fast 19" LCD screen, which is ok for most games (and which is my primary screen to work on). I use the CRT only for TV and really fast games. So for that, I think a CRT is still better (if available at all...), since I get 21" or 22" for the price of a 19" LCD - which is also fine for watching TV from bed :w00t:

I play everything although i'm not to much of a fan if the games not multiplayer although i can still enjoy it. I really have no mindset, if something looks fun I'll play it as I think everyone should do because they miss out on some fun games. What I do have though is 2-3 games I play for about half a year hardcore and then I put them down and look for something new that I havn't seen and is fun.
