saving depth in the alpha channel of a cubemap

Hi
i am sort of a beginner and i have a very basic question, how do i store the depth/distance info in a cubemap? When i take 6 snapshots around the reference point (for the env map) i also take the depth map for each view and save it to texture, how can i save the depth values in the depth map to the alpha channel of the cubemap?

in the vertex shader set the alpha channel of color output to z.
