For those of you using a tabbed browser (welcome to the 21st century! ;)), you probably hate links that pop up in new windows. *cough*devmasterlinks*cough*. For firebird users, at least, the answer is here. This extension allows you to make pop up windows open in new tabs, instead of new windows.

It also does other cool stuff, so I heartily recommend it to all you firebird guys.

davepermen: hmm. When I click on links in posts (such as the one in my post) it used to (until I installed this extension) pop up in a new window, rather than opening in the current window. Maybe it's just me, but the code has target='_blank' in it, which normally does that.

Firebird is my best browser experience so far. Have been using it since quite some time now.

that's actually a mozilla specific problem since it supports both tabbed and multi window mode. opera for example always opens new windows as new tabs

I prefer nice tabs, all in one window, rather than lots of windows popping up when I didn't want them to. This is the same reason I don't like pop up ads.

this has nothing to do with ads..

you must have a bad browser then. i don't have any issues with it. i can open it as new window wich is default, or in the current one, this is just a different movement, no problem..

that much about the new expirience of your browser.. :D

ie was mdi once (nt3.1 or so has it). but i couldn't even get to google or microsoft.com with it recently, hehe:D fun browser btw:D

i have not much use for tabbed thingies and thongies, i'm too trained to use alt-tab for anything anyways. i have not much need to learn another key-combo to tab in ie around, and one to tab between programs around. most of the time, i tab between msn messenger and ie, and some D-env :D so i need alt-tab all the time anyways.

so.... whats the problem again? :D

while we are at it... in mozilla under the close tab option in the menu comes the close all other tabs option which, aside from being completely useless, drives me insane.

you can use ctrl+tab in firebird to switch between tabs if you want.

If you install that plugin, you can modify the menu when you right+click on tabs.

I can do the same, but I'm saying that I don't like it forcing me to always choose to open a new tab, rather than just being able to click on it.

My comparison to ads was because they pop up without asking me if I want to open a new window, and so do these links.

anyway, I don't want to start a flame war, so we'll just agree to use our own browsers. My only point to this topic was to point out to people with firebird that this extension is useful.

yeah, if you can't learn to use normal behaviour and design ideology of any todays os: having windows..

i won't comment on the goodness or badness of windows on itself (i would not use them, if i'd create an os..). but in an os having them as a base for the gui, you normally have the best expirience if you use that feature, too..

at least my os is designed very well to utilise those windows in a handy way.. no need for the mouse or anything, very quick task-switching..

this is not a flame war. this is an ideology war. i never got around the use of tabs really. they collect together windows of the same app. i don't need to collect them. else i have to manage a 2 level tree of windows in brain, to know where i want to go to. having all in one collection is much easier to navigate. thats what the taskbar is designed for.

then again, i'll use it for my app as well.. just because its so simple to code:D
