Hi to everybody,
i would like to ask a simple question ; which is considered to be the best 3d engine for an elite-clone like game with network capabilities
Off course the graphics should be at least to the " Privateer 2" standards if not better .
I don't know if i have made my self clear i am talking about a 3d space simulator with the elements of the old time classic "Elite"
Greetings from Greece
* Sorry wrong place for posting if u can move it to 3D engines i would be much obliged......that scroll wheel .... :( *

OH MY GOD :surprise:
Do you know when "Privateer 2" released ? yes, thats right in Nov 30, 1996 :)
And DO you know when we are now ? April 8,2006 :)
so any engine listed here is much much much better than "Privateers 2" graphics engine.
sorry for being sarcastic, but i could not help it. :(, so forgive me :worthy:
To tell you what is the best fit for you i want to know what is your programming skills, what hardware capabilities you are targeting,if you are willing to purshase an engine or you want a free one, etc.
Personally,i use nebula device 2 which is very good it is a complete game engine with avarage networking support, also there is Ogre3d and irrlicht but they are just rendering engines so you will need to bind them with other libraries such networking to make your game.also there is panda3d which is very good python driven free engine.
I send you greetings across the mediterranean sea :).

Thanks
I know that privateer i oooolllldddd but as far i remember it had great graphics.I wanted to give some kind of measure if i would ask for X2 graphics it would be too much.
Any way i have a look at your nebula device 2
If i can get X2 level graphics this would be more than great but i don't want the world ..... :)
thanks anyway

Hi Again :)
Oh i forgot to tell you that,Space shooters are not like other games, they are not very needy.
They mainly depend on the particle effects and art so any engine with a good particle effects engine would be good for this type of games.

I wish you'd make it OpenGL compatible so it can be ported to non-Windows platforms. Both Ogre and Irrlicht are open-source so they would qualify.

Sry for the late reply.I think this is a good idea but i am not if it would apply to a fully commercial game...it has to be decided but not now....:)
