Well, I'm sure you have all been asked this a million times by noobs like me but what’s the next step? I'm pretty good a C++ and math, I can use DirectX and OpenGL, and I can create things in 3d using blender (though art is not my strong point  ). Where do I go next? The most I have been able to do up until now is make a skybox then load a mesh inside and walk around via a first person or make a plane with a cube above it so I can do stencil shadows + reflections. I would love to make games (3d) - I think I have the basic skills that I would need, but I just can't seem to put them all together. Anyone have any suggestions on where I could learn or some small exercises to help me put my skills together so I can actually make something?

Join a team. Either join one or start one on your own. Or make some small 2D games which are easy to complete for a single person (actually easy is an understatement, finishing a game by yourself is always a pain so to speak).

Or you can make a game engine. Read up on architecture, look through other designs and start making one of your own...

Do something simple, like a 3d space invaders, just a load of enemies slowly moving towards you that you have to shoot... once that's working, add extra bits like bonuses that whizz across the screen or collectable weapons... just doing that much will give you an idea of how to put something together. Add a hi score table and some intro screens... maybe split the enemies into waves, each moving faster than the previous wave... perhaps an end screen if the player reaches wave 100... keep adding simple bits and you'll soon have a neat little game all written by your own fair hand. Shouldn't take you more than, oooo... six months... ;-)

And if you do finish it give me a credit ;-)

I'm currently just beginning to get into the programming side of game development, but I have a laid out a roadmap for myself of what to learn and when. Sounds like you need to get ahold of these two books.

Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 9.0
http://www.amazon.co...glance&n=283155

Programming a Multiplayer FPS in DirectX
http://www.amazon.co...5Fencoding=UTF8

I don't know what your directx skills are like, so you might skip the first one, but the second book is most likely exactly what you are looking for.
