Assume I have the following:

1. A set of 3D models (.3ds, .rbody, etc.) of automobiles, people, buildings, etc.
2. A scenario in which I want these actors to interact. That is, at TimeA, three trucks are located at X, at TimeB the actors more to location Y, etc.

I'm looking for a 3D modelling tool (a GUI, not an API) that will allow me to create scenes where I can place these 3D objects in an environment. I want to take a snapshot of each scene and manually move the actors. Pretty straight forward.

What tools (especially freeware!) would be the best to do this? I've played with 3dDelta's Stage tool but it, in my opinion, is pretty primative. I've played with Blender but could not figure out how to import .rbody and .3ds files. With respect to the latter I think it should be possible but I just don't know how it is possible.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Well if you write the desired plugin, you can make any 3D modeling software load your desired format (.rbody in that case). Some of the best options include Blender, GMax and my favorite - Anim8r. How to write plugin for the software package is normally described in the manual that comes with it!

Try a search on google for 'Getic 3D'.
