To make your game unique, add your own 3d models, or use the generic ones that come with the software.
If you'd like to discuss Realm Crafter, or share some of your 3d models, drop by MMORPG Maker.

The stock media is really quite nice:

I hope we get some free MMORPGs to play out of this.

Yeahh, it look nice - it seems like even inexperienced users can do something with this one, however, the pricetag does cause me a little concern - i.e. if it is so great then why don't they charge more ? - I'll actually go as far as saying that if it was more expensive thqan it is then i would "trust" the product more, but that's probably just because i don't know what i'm talking about

its all drag and drop, there is a scripting engine so you can script your actors. it's great just try it.
there will be a demo game made with it later on.

Andrew, looking forward to your demo. All the RC beta testers will have a head start on everyone else, which means we'll get to see their games first. I'm sure there will be a lot of fun games made by the beta testers.
I'm sure a lot of people will make not only free games, but games with a small subscription fee. After all, if you want to have a lot of Players logged on at once you'll need a host for the server, and those aren't exactly cheap.
While the official forums are closed during beta, feel free to stop by MMORPG Maker.

Nope, but I've heard a rumour it's actually ripped off code from Planeshift, which makes sense if you consider their webpage had some screenshots that were ripped off from someone's public art portfolio up until about a week ago.
Everything about this seems dodgy, if you google it there are hundreds of forums in which this has been spammed with about the same post word for word.

There's nothing very "dodgy" about it. I found the RC site and became interested in the software about the same time the official RC forums were closed. As I understand it, the devs closed the forums so they could concentrate on the beta, and left the forums open only to beta testers. Probably a very wise move on their part.
I wanted to discuss the upcoming release, and get together like minded individuals that want to make MMORPGs. There's still a lot of work they can do before, and even after release, like learn to make 3d models, actually MAKE some 3d models, learn Blitz, and Blitz 3d, write NPC dialogue, plot out quests, and so forth.
So, I started MMORPG Maker. I posted on several boards inviting those interested to join and discuss the MMORPG they want to make. You're right, all the posts say pretty much the same thing. RC lets you make an MMORPG without programming (and it does) or you can learn Blitz and program unique features into your MMORPG. Wanna chat about it? Go to MMORPG Maker, which is a "fansite" for the upcoming software REalm Crafter. YOu can chat there while the "official" forums are closed (and afterwards as well :) ).
Judging by the response, a lot of people are really looking forward to the RC release.
I haven't "spammed" anything. In fact, as far as I know, ravuya is the only poster I've seen on any site complaining about any posts i've made. I just let people know, that if they wanna make an mmorpg, and want to chat about it somewhere where they won't yell at you for being a newb, to stop by. I'm not selling anything, or making any money in any way from RC or the MMORPG Maker site. Dude, it's just website with a forum. Even the banner exchange on MMORPG Maker is a free exchange, and does not generate any revenue whatsoever.
The actual developers of Realm Crafter have been pretty close lipped since they closed the official forums to go into beta testing. They haven't posted any advertising for the game on any websites as far as I know.
I've chatted with a few of the beta testers, and they can't say much because of the NDA, (which we all hope will get dropped soon), but they all assure me RC will be a top notch product when it's released, because of what they have seen already. That's good enough for me. If it's not good enough for you, OK fine.
I really don't see what's so "dodgy" about the whole thing, but just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you.

If you scan the site for even a couple of seconds, you can see that's not true... Planeshift is an open source engine based on Crystalspace. It's in C+. RealmCrafter is written in Blitz 3D. Entirely different code. I understand that the art in question was purchased, not ripped off, along with a variety of original art as well from the same guy.
As for Gilvane's posts, well - he's trying to raise public awareness of his fan site. Can't fault him for that. One good way to get the word out about your private website is to start threads on a lot of forums. But remember that mmorpgmaker.com is not RealmCrafter - they're not affiliated in any way, the site is just a fan site someone created for people to talk about RC on.

I sort of agree... The bulk of RC creations are going to be some hobbyist building their game in their free time, tossing together some art of their own and the stock art that comes with the game, or that can be found free on the net. Most will be a lot alike, as DikuMUDs look like DikuMUDs, and LPMUDs look like LPMUDs.
On the flip side, you can buy the source code too; which means you can alter the engine into whatever you want it to look like. I think most pro/semi pro attempts will run with this sort of system. And my HOPE is that we'll eventually see (alongside the scores or hundreds of slushpile attempts) a few, maybe a few dozen even, strong attempts, along the lines of ATITD. ATITD was a tiny MMO, with only a few thousand players, created by two people. They're on their second iteration now, still going strong, and have expanded their company to start building a larger game based on Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker novels. Their initial game totally rennovated the crafting system standard in MMORPGs - EQ2 is borrowing elements from them, as are several other games currently under development.
I guess my hope is that the genre will see a few small revolutions like this happen as a result of RC. If even one in 100 has some good innovation in it, we'll see some serious impact on the genre as a whole.

My response to this is pretty much, ummm, so what? RC is just a tool. The only thing that sparks these sorts of comments is that it's a tool that hasn't been around before. I think these sorts of comments have been made about most new tools that are developed and given to people that didn't have access to them before.
Like the printing press. Oh gosh, now ANYONE can print something cheaply, they don't have to have it hand copied by monks, they will probably print all sorts of worthless books, isn't that awful?
Well, yes, everyone isn't Shakespeare. So?
Do you honestly think that keeping it so that only large corporations with millions can make an MMORPG is a GOOD thing? (yes, I'm leaving out ATITD. I don't like crafting).
The other point is that many people are planning on doing lots of different things with RC. Yes, a lot of people want to make their own cookie cutter MMORPG, right out of the box. But some people want to make PSWs (Persistant State Worlds) that are more for chatting, with a few activities. Some people want to run small games for their friends. Some people want to make MMORPGs that are VERY far from the mainstream. Some people want to concentrate on the Game Master aspect of RC, which will make a cookie cutter game absolutely unique.
That's one of the aspects of Realm Crafter I'm really interested in; the ability to have live game masters that act as NPCs and storytellers, with the ability to give rewards and trigger scripts.
In that regard you could think of RC like the Dungeon and Dragons books. Yes, everyone had the same books, like everyone will have the same RC engine, but the games were VERY different.
Besides, wait till the modders get finished with RC. I'll bet you see some pretty wild stuff.

Now, they are going to begin selling beta copies on October 2, 2005. It's a bit unusual to sell beta's, but that's what they are doing. I haven't read the purchase agreement, so I don't know what the details will be on this Oct 2 sale. I havent' tested the beta engine, but I've heard it can do quite a bit, although it's kinda buggy.

I'm not a dev. Don't blame me if this changes, or is not exactly accurate. That's just the latest info that's out there. Chat about it at MMORPG Maker:
