me->

name: Magnus Wootton.
age: 32
art experience: 2d art, 3d art, music&sound.
programming experience: networking, d3d11, ai.
publishing skills: none
location: perth western Australia.
email: rouncer81@hotmail.com
games under belt: 0.
demos under belt: 10000000000000000000000000000000000 :)

Id like to form a temporary volunteer group and finish a small game together over a period of 6 months that well publish somewhere (like the ipad app store - or some pc alternative) and sell the game for $5 a copy.
If your interested, post your name, age, experience and location like I have, I wonder if anyone is interested at all.
The game we make is to be discussed on skype or facebook, or somewhere, what api or even engine we use is to be discussed too, nothing is in stone yet. I was thinking maybe something like dota? but it could be anything.

So far, I have one guy that will probably help, he lives in perth too - and hes a brilliant musician. (better than me)
Anyone can apply, you dont have to be as experienced as me - just knowing that your useful in some way, be it art, or coding, or something is all you need. Just believe in yourself and ill believe in you! Oh yeh, im not necessarily the "leader" of the group or anything, I just am looking to start a team of peers.
you used to be able to fit a game on a disk, then you used to be able to fit a game on a cd, then you used to be able to fit a game on a dvd, now you can barely fit one on your harddrive.

Just curious. How did you do your calculations that the development of the game would be 6 months if you don`t know the size of your team. Or are you going to work for 6 months even if you are 5 or 50. What do I have to take in consideration when trying to establish the length of development?

#kesmanu23 - I'd also say that you can't calculate in man-hours, and larger team means game finished sooner. Some projects can be done in single day or two with just 2 men. Some projects take weeks to months with few people, but getting more people in team means just that it will take longer (organizing work of 5 men is way easier than 50 men).

#rouncer - Depending on the project (if it should be something like DevMaster.net community project or so), I guess you can count me in... Sadly I really don't want to write my programming "biography" here, so I'll just sum it:
name: Vilem Otte Jr.
experience: 2d, 3d art & sculpting (true hobbyist - so don't count on me that I create something better than cube); database development (meaning like creating the tech of database, not database itself - thats for less insane people like me); gui development (meaning again like gui tech, not gui applications); ray-tracing; image processing; game engine & game development (mainly graphics, physics, editors, generators (F.e. vegetation & tree generators) ... but I also worked on ai, networking & game logic); - basically all programming skills were used for both hobby & professional projects; Also note that most my projects are written in the way, that it can be run on multiple OSes (Linux(es), Windows(es), BSD(es), etc.)
publishing skills: products on Czech market, several also in different parts of the world (mostly for single company)
games under belt: small games around 10 (all of them made profit in green numbers! :D) + contributed in few freeware projects (mostly just a little bit of code, but I think it counts)
demos under belt: as it's my hobby, I really don't know exact number (but I bet it would get close to rouncer's number :D)
email: vilem.otte@post.cz
location: Nový Šaldorf - Sedlešovice (near Znojmo, approx. 80km to Wien), Czech Republic (Central Europe -> Earth :D)

I won't write non-game software I've released (or contributed into) as it would be quite a list and it's definitely unrelated (I think you get the idea about software from experience block).

Ok thats great!

Igor and Vilem your in?

That makes 4 of us now, we have to organize a time to meet up somewhere to chat about the project, like what we are most suited to making.
If anyone has any suggestions about where we meet up, say it now, otherwise ill work out something myself and hit you both with it. :)

6 months should be long enough to finish the game, im pretty sure...

Of course, more people would be even better!

Im serious about this, I gotta work something out with time differences and things so we can make a solid time of day we can all meet up every week or so.

You younger less experienced guys can always handle the game tools making maps, or writing story components and things, so everyone can be useful.

Hard to tell, maybe more people will join later - let's keep the topic open and possibly post progress from time to time -> it might convince others.

EDIT: This question is mainly on rouncer - as he started this thread: So how/when are we gonna start?

It's like 7:30 am here right now (and at Perth I think it's 14:30), afaik Igor (Aier) in Italy has same time zone as me - I'll be available in like 2 hours (maybe sooner). But then I'll have to go shoppin' (I don't have anything for lunch here :D)

May I suggest you use Skype.

You can create a group and do conference calls when you are all online. If you are not all online you can still leave messages and they will be picked up when each of you comes online.

It keeps records for ages, so you can go back and check things when you forget

Really useful

Skype is one of the options, in work we also use private forums on our site -> where we even archive the stuff, along with wiki (which is quite useful, F.e. when betatesters write notes what should be upgraded, etc.).

The recruitment forum is for paid jobs or established projects, and one of the rules specifically state not for "when it's done" type jobs because we all know where they go :) I'm not sure what to do with this thread yet, but I will say in my opinion that what I see so far discussed does not paint a bright future. I want you guys to be rewarded for your efforts, but not get divided when things go south and the project fails due to lack of initiative.

A while back, some members brought up the idea of a community devmaster project. This site had a community run wiki at one point, but it collapsed due to lack of involvement. On occasion, some even suggested exactly what rouncer is asking, but none of the projects happened. When you get paid to do something, you have a legal obligation to complete it. You're compelled to put in 8 hours a day, often coerced to work a couple more :D. When you do something on the side, it too becomes an after thought.

If you feel really strongly that you can complete a community project, even if that means mostly one person has to carry it forward, then by all means try. You can post your progress in the personal announcement forum (please include some tech details too, don't blatantly advertise). I only ask that you demonstrate a little more initiative by having a plan and set realistic goals. I would not personally start a 6 month project with strangers. In fact, do a simple test. See if you can all make a game of tic tac toe by the end of the week. If you can accomplish that, then set your goals higher each time. You'll know right away if this is going to be a reality or a daydream.

I had an idea of what the game might be, theres say 10-15 characters with different combat abilities then we versus battle them together to see whos the best.

Igor, Villem has contacted me on skype, and you need to as well, we will get a 3 way conversation happening.

Have you all started? I just recently found this forum and I have an interest in game programming and finding a group like this one. Most of my knowledge is C# and web programming but I can learn anything quickly. I also went to school for media production, which I would consider my art side, working with primarily audio/visual projects.
