Hello,
I need to choose a GUI toolkit which will be used to develop an application involving 3D exploration of terrain and some other features.
I don't know which free UI to choose between
- fox toolkit
- wxWidgets
- any others??

I'd like to know if anybody has experience with any, or is able to make a short comparison in terms of performance/ ease of programming and mantainance.
thanks a lot
Ricky

If you're on Linux: GDK+, wxWindows
If you're on Windows: wxWindows

They're called GTK, and wxWidgets (name change because of a trademark clash with microsoft).

Also to note is that GTK has a windows port, however I used GTK myself for a while and I found the windows port awful.

which is in fact the understatement of the year :)
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

I try my best.

Mind you, that's not to say that wxWidgets is good. It works, and it's easy, but I wouldn't use it if I had a choice.

You do have a choice. MFC and ATL are other options? (the obvious ones I would've thought)... under Windows only.

WTL is free (but of course, windows only).

MFC is somewhat good (although as anubis pointed NOT free) but ATL is a junk.... I never really heard of anyone using it?

MFC is free. If not, how much does it cost? :-)

the windows API is also free then.
just because i don't have to pay to develop software using the windows api doesn't mean that i can change it or have a say in it's design, because it is owned by microsoft. so when people talk about "free software" they usually don't mean free as in free beer but free as in free speach (citing richard stallman).
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

FLTK is free as in freedom, and according to what I've heard works pretty well. I haven't used it yet, so maybe wxWindows (or whatever it's called now) would work better.
