I wish him the best, but I thinks there's been a falloff of interest in game development, at least the social part. There are more indies than ever.
Currently using Blender and Unity.

This brings me to one question (a bit OT) - but when will or even whether will DevMaster.net have back Image of the Day? (I know I'm like zillionth man to ask

I think, because of the commercial aspect of it. I'm not sure, really. The Flipcode days were just a bunch of people having fun programming and experimenting, or maybe it's all this Facebook stuff, or the more diverse programming choices, but I think he wants to go back in time and you can't do that.
Currently using Blender and Unity.

Wow, I just found an old IOTD of mine still on Flipcode.
Fireside, I can assure you that, at least for myself, I still have fun programming and experimenting

when realtime pathtracing finally comes in, thatll boost a bit of interest again i bet.
you used to be able to fit a game on a disk, then you used to be able to fit a game on a cd, then you used to be able to fit a game on a dvd, now you can barely fit one on your harddrive.
