Keeping in mind the following elements--relative ease of use, power, functionality...the usual considerations--what is/are the best game engines/softwares? I'm currently learning Unity and considering the Pro upgrade. I love the simple yet powerful scripting capabilities of Unity, and the fact that it's geared towards artists with less technical background as well as programmers. Are there other, better choices?

if you're looking for ease of use, then unity is the best choice you have.
However, functionality and performance is rather limited, so don't try making the newest hardcore MMO with it.

If you're looking for something much better in performance and functionality, but still has a good workflow, try http://udk.com/
You don't have to be the best programmer to use it, but it's a bit more technical than unity I would say.

Atm I'm studying game dev, and nearly all the artists are working with either unity or UDK. The ones with more technical experience usually prefer UDK.

Xcrypt: thanks! That's very helpful. I'd actually not looked into UDK, although I'd heard of it. I'm going to download it and test it out.

AliceLiddell: you bet it helped! Thanks for the link; looks like great stuff. I'm looking at it right now.
