I'm not sure why image of the day got abandoned. I see all these images scroll by at the top of the main page, why can't image of the day be one of those? Granted, I've only actually put one image on this site, but it would be nice to see a little more variety, even though it never actually was image of the day. Maybe call it "latest user image" or something. I don't quite understand what the big deal is or why it got abandoned.
Currently using Blender and Unity.

According to your previous inquiry, it's in the works. Whether or not it's still on the feature list or if it fell into cyberspace is anybody's guess. If you want to publish an article of some sort, you can optionally request to show an image with it. As for IOTD type stuff, I suppose if the demand is there then its priority would be raised. It is afterall called image of the day and not image of the week, month, or dare I say year :D

We can consider raising its priority if there is sufficient demand. For now, the focus on the site is going to be to revamp the homepage to show user-ranked discussion posts and links (that is, the forums "move" to the homepage, albeit in a very different form). The IOTD feature can fit with this community-driven style nicely.
