Hi Guys,
I am planning to buy MS Kinect for PC.
Could anyone let me know the flexibility it provides for a developer along with its SDK ie to what extent can we program the device.
Also could it be applied for non-game applications too??
Regards,
Sujay

Hi Sujay,
I haven't developed for Kinect, but was there something on the Develop for Kinect website that didn't answer your question? The SDK and APIs are downloadable, which should give you a complete understanding of what can be done. From some of the videos I've seen on YouTube, people have been using Kinect mostly for motion capturing. And yes, you can use Kinect for non-gaming related activities. See KinectHacks for some interesting projects out there.

I just was a judge at the TIGA Gamehack this weekend, one entry was a 3D game using kinect.
They had it running on a laptop with a webcam, so I think the SDK will do anything you want

Anything you want is a bit vague.Like what specifically it can do.

Well I guess you would have to look at the SDK to work that out.
My point was that two guys in 24 hours managed to write a kinect game using a webcam to replace the actual xbox hardware.
If they can do that, with more time to code, you should be able to leverage the SDK to do whatever you feel like, given it is a gesture/ posture recognition system. It's not going to cook you your dinner or pour you a pint of beer
