Have any of you noticed that almost everyone here is a coder. I myself am a 3d modeller/animator and I find it hard to talk on this forum. I'm sure that if you advertised this site on more 3d graphics websites you would get more modellers coming onto it. One must always remember that there is a lot more to game making that coding.

True, and especially as we coders get our acts together and make reuseable frameworks, our part in a game becomes less and less compared to that of the artists.
Generally speaking though, this forum is focused on the programming aspect. I mean one could say we are neglecting the database web programmers because there is more to programming than just game programming, but forums like these tend to be specialized.
That said, it would be great if we could make a partnership with some kind of sister site focused on game modeling. Barring that, it may be a good idea to make a section of the forums for people to post their artwork.

That would be awesome, perhaps ever a dev-snapshot style area where people can post rendered models not in a real time engine.
An even easier start to attracting more modellers would be just adding a category for graphics, rather than just graphics theory, which seems to be all about scripting cubes in OpenGL ranther than game models in 3DSMAX or Maya.
So yeah, just a few things to think about,

great idea... we would only have to find a site that is willing to team up with us
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

You can submit rendered models as dev snapshots. As long as you give enough info on the effects used and different techniques and what not... The dev snapshot is not just for programatically procedurally generated stuff... Anything related to game development.

This was a comment for the "realistic art with blender" snapshot, because of this i thought that any work in the snapshot had to be of either a working project, or a screenshot of a game.
My bad, I will start submitting some snaps then :D

That was in reply to a complaint about how bad the engine was. I mearly meant to say that it was not in fact an engine at all.

BTW, to a some extent it is. There's shockwave-type browser plugin for Blender files, and decent OGL realtime renderer for interactive animation. So it is possible to create game using Blender only. Never heared about a complete game done with Blender thou.

sorry guys, my bad interperation. I can't think that anyone would want to make a game using only blender though. Apparently if you are '1337' enough at MAXscript you can script your own game using only 3dsMAX. Strange what they come up with these days.

Blender's 3dengine is actually pretty good. The problem is that while most game made by programmers using an IDE are not too great, most games that have been made by artists alone with Blender have not been to great.
This is exactly the same reason that most Flash games are not great. To put it frankly, most people's ideas suck, and most people with good ideas are not capable of bringing them to reality.
That said, blender is my modeler and animator, not my game engine.

personally I'm a 3d Studio MAX 7 man, and I would like to know on the same tack whether or not one can export a .3ds file to .bsp or .map and use it as a map? any ideas??

you mean natively ? why should 3ds max support construction of bsp trees ? the structure of those is totally specific to the engine using them... you can of course write an exporter script or a little converter app
If Prolog is the answer, what is the question ?

by the way the 3dsMAX post was me and I meant was it able to gtet a converter app, or can you recommend one to me that will convert .3ds meshes into .bsp or .map maps?

And by the way (sorry for the double post) if we hadn't strayed from the topic at hand (graphics and users) you would know that I am not a scripter, in fact I couldn't find the introduction thread and I would like to take this chance to introduce myself.
I am a 3d modeller/animator, I am also a world builder, web designer/programmer (php), and I made the ever-popular (I wish) RPG system for my outdated plea for help thread.
So because of my lack of programming 'leetness' and couldn't 'whip up' a quick script to convert .3ds to .bsp.
So yeah, I would like more graphic designers to come to devmaster as I think it is an awesome community for (mainly) indie game development.
Now that that is doen, thanks.
