Hello, I'm currently attending my first year of college(Computer Science Major), and while I'm interested in breaking into the games industry, I just would like to know where would be a good place to start practicing how the world of game development functions?

For instance, what are some good books for beginners advice? What type of programs should play around in? I'm only going through the basic: Maths and CS right now, but in the future what are some courses that should be recommended for getting a little taste of what game design holds?

Thank you in advance.

It actually depends on what type of game you want to pursue. I mean, do you want an rpg, first person shooter, strategy or even a puzzle game. And if you are already able to pick one, you need to know the components it requires to be able to run that type of game. Usually, people start with the storyline, though you could make do with this if you are going to develop something that is autonomous, or can stand on its own.

Make small games.

Look up game making tutorials, such as mine: http://iki.fi/sol/gp/

After you've made a couple small games you know a lot of things you need to learn more about.

After that you can start worrying about storylines and other stuff mr. curtis mentioned.
