Voxel based terrain engines?
Posted 29 July 2011 - 10:20 PM
I'm looking for a voxel based terrain engine. Something easy enough to make huge terrains with caves and overhangs on the go. It should be an engine for indies or atleast with low cost license. With easy tree placement and texturing at hand.
I've found only C4 game engine.
Also I've found Acropora voxel terrain generator. But what game engines can use its results? Haven't had answer from Acropora forum for a few days.
Any other? Thanks for advise! Cheers upfront!

i dunno how easy it is to get a license for it, cause its still in development, worth a look tho... voxels are still in their infancy, as it all works now yes, but there hasnt been enough development in this area for anyone to just jump in a go voxels.
Really... the only way to get voxels going like this, is to code from scratch....

where you gonna store all of it?
but this is actually where im headed right now, remember, you can always export the voxel world to some megatextured lowpoly version, i think im gonna try that.
im estimating i can get about 100k x 100k terrain in about 2 gigs with the compression ive got now. [/edit]

Some initial screenshots and discussion can be found here:
This is all entirely free and open source.
There is also some good discussion happening around Mythruna, a Minecraft-inspired game also made with jMonkeyEngine 3.

The C4 Engine can import the data generated by Acropora.

Java would prove too inefficient and C4 engine, well it is now the same as it was a year ago. Nothing changes, its slow paced in development. Atomontage looks nice but it seems it would need around 1.5 years to get it anywhere.
Nothing else? This voxel thing is a nervous thing!
