Hi, I've been working for a while on a new project called Terra Incognita. This is a very early prototype of the game with almost no graphics, no lifebar, goals, etc. Still, I'd love to get some feedback from people about the control scheme and the game in general - most importantly is it fun to explore and shoot at stuff. Please notice that the game it is still incomplete so keep that in mind.

Download Terra here:
http://www.2dengine....terra/proto.zip
Extract into a separate folder, then run SHMUP.BAT.
To move your ship around, use a joystick or the arrow keys on your keyboard.
Z key shoots (joystick button 1)

Thanks for your time.

The first thing I compliment you for, is it actually runs on my computer, thats actually hard to get to happen. :)

thats really cool, i see youve got collision detection, some ai, particles for the bullets.

I like your text output of the game debug spitting out on the screen, shows some conciencous programming.

It looks a little drab just being black and white vector space, maybe you could overlay a tile map and get the whole thing to look like a full colour sprite background.

But good going, how many years experience have you got now?
you used to be able to fit a game on a disk, then you used to be able to fit a game on a cd, then you used to be able to fit a game on a dvd, now you can barely fit one on your harddrive.

Hey rouncer, thanks for the positive comment!
The project is taking much longer than expected so any encouragement is greatly appreciated. :)
Ya, the world still looks and feels quite dull, I'm not sure but I think it would be better if there were more things to interact with. Either that or your ship should be able to move much faster perhaps.
Unfortunately a tilemap might be out of the question because the world is vector-based so I don't see how that could work? I might have to stick to vector graphics for now. I've actually tried adding some rudamentary graphics to a couple of levels to the north but it's nothing spectacular or final.
This project has been in the works for a year... my previous game Chains took about 3-4 months but I've been working with my brother on our engine since 2006.
What about you - are there any games have you worked on? :)

Chains was pretty cool, I played that a while back, mostly I can note from your games is they are nice and smooth running.

Ive been coding for about 10 years now... im running late.

I havent actually got a finished game yet cause there was too much to do most probably because my ideas were too bloated :) and I havent until recently had enough skill in programming to deal with all the bugs I was making, but my next system which im putting together now is going really well!
All my tools are heaps better programmed than my old stuff.

Ill have a megatextured environment in a couple of months so look out for "rouncer" top right corner cause ill have a cool movie to look at, but there will be no download at first cause i havent figured out how to compress all the gigs of textures down to a reasonable size yet.

It should be nice and "filling" to look at, and all the art will be mine, cause I practice art as well as programming, should look good. I cant actually wait to see it.

Its good to hear your working with your brother, my 2 brothers are too lazy to be programmers, its too much work for them... im on my own.

Do you have any demos or anything we can look at?

By the way, a new prototype of the game is out.
Notice that there's still barebone graphics so please focus your comment on the gameplay.
Still haven't added a lifebar so you can't really die but I'm curious if anyone has ideas on how to make the gameplay more fun.
Z button shoots, X button gives you a light boost although it doesn't work too good in the current prototype.
As I mentioned before, the game plays better with a joystick.
You can download the latest proto here:
http://2dengine.com/terra/proto2.zip ~2MB
Thanks
