I am kind of stealing this from dev shed, but to prevent spam could we disable links in posts/signatures until they have n number of posts?

nah, thats no good, thats deprivation of liberty.
you used to be able to fit a game on a disk, then you used to be able to fit a game on a cd, then you used to be able to fit a game on a dvd, now you can barely fit one on your harddrive.

That would be no good. What if people want to ask a question that requires a link? Most new members sign up because they have a question to ask, and I think it's unreasonable to prevent these people from linking us to their problems.

It doesn't stop them from posting it as text for example:

How about we advise the user that he cannot post links for 8 posts (displayed when they first create their account).
If the user tries to post a link, they will recieve a (very clear and flashy) message telling them that they cannot do that until they have completled 8 posts (and the post will not be put up, it will wait till they remove the link and will not count as a post).
If the user attepmts to post more than (say) 3 in a row with links in them, the account is banned.
If the user misses the "REFRAIN FROM POSTING LINKS!!!" message more than 3 times, chances are almost certain its a bot (or a human with the intelligence level of a spammer).
Signatures though I've never seen as a real issue, but I'm sure we could rig up a system for that too.

We are a predominately male group (any females here?), so of course if its not broken we will still try to fix it!:lol:

Signature spam actually turns up quite often. In any case, I think I agree with poita. This would be an unreasonable burden on legitimate new members. Having the mods manually delete spam posts works well enough, IMHO. 
Also, in case anyone didn't know, you can report a spam post to the mods by clicking the 
icon in the corner of a post. Doing that sends us all an email about it. Although, for me personally, I generally check DevMaster right after checking email, so it won't get me there any faster.

Yeah, with (at least) three of us checking email, mostly North American time zones though, spam does happen but is pretty short-lived.
Hyperbole is, like, the absolute best, most wonderful thing ever! However, you'd be an idiot to not think dogmatism is always bad.

Well I too carry a view that links should be disabled unless the nth post. Not in the actual post but in the signature. I am new and I know my signature will be deleted but i will be happy.

If this is supposed to save data, then I think it wont work. "Spammers" would just post pointless posts until they could post links.

thats a good point, however if its a problem here, (not that ive noticed it is) then spammers tend to post quite a few links - which could be flagged as spam, or links in new members posts could be simply subject to aproval, there are also blacklists which could be checked against - most spammers post the same spam to many boards, some use blackilists.
