Does realism sell, shit yes.
Even alien weather from venus!
On the topic is weather usually just aesthetic and never involves the gameplay? Of course, sitting a bunch of snow in the air could
shake you off your target in an fps game - simply to add more "noise" in the environment would change the gameplay slightly im sure of it.
On a rainy day, your tires slip more in a racing game - so that would actually involve special code.
And would that help your car game sell? Well it definitely couldn't hurt.
What im definitely against due to other factors in consideration is the day night cycle... id prefer mega texturing with 100% true radiosity over
day night cycle any day, because why not just have the weather "static" on the map instead, and you just sorta pick from "weather modes" but it
doesnt switch between the modes realtime... and i dont think its important if it does.
The first game to have traversable water possibly was quake 1, and thats how im implementing mine, in water sectors... definitely adds a little detail
to the map, having pools of water.

If you want me to, i guess i can put them up here later on, I'd just like to wait till the deadline with it (10th of January) it's just i fear it might manipulate the results if i do it now.
Edit: fixed typo
