I'd like to get started with some open 3d engine and am wondering which... My interests are more kind of "art experiments" than complete games so I guess I'm interested in something with fancy features before framerate efficiency etc. I see Ogre3d phraised a lot, is that the best recommendation? c/c++, linux, opengl.

You probably just want to use Linux as your search requirement in the Engine database and take a look at some of them. Depends on your programming experience and other tastes. Blender game engine is a very good introduction into 3d programming if you are new to programming and 3d modeling. If you've done some c++ programming already, you would probably want another engine like Ogre, Horde3d or Irrlicht.
Currently using Blender 2.5, FlashPunk, and Unity.

Thanks. The programming's not a problem, I did a lot of OpenGL a few years back (about when shader programming was still magic). This time I just don't want to do everything from scratch. When I compared, Ogre seemed better (for me) than Irrlicht.. Horde3d hasn't gotten much attention on devmaster, has it (0 reviews)? Maybe I'll try Ogre. But any other comments are welcome, and thanks again.

Yes I agree, OGRE Looks really powerful. I cannot comment much since i am myself not a master in OGRE....but still i have started doing apps in OGRE...I ve worked on Very High Level APIs VEGA PRIME and 3DVIA Virtools . Now i have started working on OGRE....I really like it...... It is truly versatile.....

If by "experiments" you mean "out of the ordinary" or "pushing the envelope", then you may not want to go with a game engine that does too much for you. You should consider OGRE or Horde3D. Or, maybe a product like C4/Torque3D.
Hyperbole is, like, the absolute best, most wonderful thing ever! However, you'd be an idiot to not think dogmatism is always bad.
