RPGDX is having another one of their friendly mini-competitions, where you're trying to make games (mostly RPGs) in a limited time period. The competitions are just for fun, and you don't win anything besides the bragging rights... and the winner is voted by the participants.

This time, the theme of the competition is to make a sidescrolling RPG in 48 hours, and is set for August 15-16. Basicly, you start when you wake up on saturday morning, and try to finish something before going to bed at sunday night, and you do as much as you want to in between. You can use any engine, tool or language you like, and for any platform.

As 48 hours is a rather short time to make a game, it usually results in quite small games, and it is important to stay focused. It is a great learning experience: having to make quick decisions, stick to them and not be too particular with what you do - the important thing is to have something playable in the end.

More details about the competition can be found here: http://forums.rpgdx....opic.php?t=2237

Hmm, this gives me a chance to battle test my Silverlight engine, so I'm down for this. Plus I haven't lived off pizza and late nights for quite some time. Need to keep my body trained and ready cause you never know...

Yeah, sounds like a perfect way of testing it under real conditions - and it's really good fun to work really focused on something for a short period :-) Some participants have already started preparing sidescrolling engines to use, and it's all good fun :D

So did anyone else end up making something for this?

I had a couple of really intense days, and a lot of fun. I didn't finish - not even close. But I'm still seriously proud of what I managed to do between friday and sunday evening :D

My game can be downloaded (for windows) here:

>>> The Jade Figurines <<<

Controls A, Z, X, and CURSOR KEYS. SPACE to skip dialogs, ESC to exit.
F8 for editor (but it will crash unless you create an empty Data\Levels folder)

I ran out of time on this one. There's only one short level and the beginnings of the next one.

Here's some actual screenshots too - but don't just look at them, download the game too and give it a try :-)

Mine will just look like this, but its gonna pack a massive event system where i replug ai throughout the game making enemies behave more intelligently.

I think ill need a little more than 48 hours tho ;) my entry will come in late... give me a couple of months and ill post it when its quarter done.
you used to be able to fit a game on a disk, then you used to be able to fit a game on a cd, then you used to be able to fit a game on a dvd, now you can barely fit one on your harddrive.

That rocks, Mattias, you have enough reason to be proud! How did you do the art, if I may ask?

@rouncer: That's good going - I really like the art style you're going for, gives it a distinctly different look and feel. I'd dampen the camera zoom quite a bit though, make it lag a bit, it's too strong now...

@roel: thanks :) well, the art is all done in Poser, which just lets you combine, tweak and animate pre-made models very easily - so easy that even I can manage :D I already had most of the characters assembled from a previous project (this one) so that saved me quite a bit of time. It's also easy to make scripts (in python) for poser, which can load and render out a lot of models automatically, which can help a lot (you can actually do pretty complex things with the scripts, I used them a while back to generate these random faces)

Cool! I was curious indeed if you manually rendered all the poses of the characters, but this explains a lot. I had no idea that it would be feasible to script face generation, that's also neat.
