I've decided that I'm going to tackle an MMOG project. I don't expect it to be quick or easy. With that said, I have a few questions for those who've trod this path already....

Firstly, I'm going for a realistic military shooter .... likely reminiscent of Call-of-Duty. Has the FPS area been beaten to death already? Of course, I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't have some ideas that would make my game novel and possibly set it apart, but for the gamers on this forum.... is this genre already too flooded??

Next ..... I need to get started somewhere. I know this must get asked ALL THE TIME, but what insights do you guys have on game engines?
I think I've narrowed the field down to:
Irrlicht (http://en.wikipedia....Irrlicht_Engine );
Gamestudio/A7 Commercial Edition (http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Gamestudio );
the C4 Engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C4_Engine );
or Multiverse (http://en.wikipedia....tiverse_Network ).

My considerations for a game engine would be as follows:
1) It must be able to render outdoor terrain very well. From what I've read, this is generally achieved using the "Chunked Level-of-Detail" method.
2) It has to allow commercial use of the end-product, without requirements to release source code.
3) I would prefer if OpenGL is supported.
4) Once I get a grip on advanced rendering, it might be necessary for me to actually dig into the graphics engine to make it do some things that I would like to see in a game .... so, I might need the source for the engine.
5) It would be good if there were tools to assist in building an FPS-style game.
6) Probably has to have a low cost -- definitely less than a couple thousand US dollars.
7) Support for various non-PC platforms would be cool ....

Speaking of which, is there any easy way to develop a game that would be largely portable to platforms like PS3/XBox, and even the iPhone?

Thanks for any advisement that you can provide!

You gotta learn to code before you even have a chance at making space invaders.

Why dont you wait till you can code your own engine before you think youll finish anything.

You're right. It does get asked ALL THE TIME. Please read the other beginner threads on the forum, then post ONLY if you have something you're SURE has not already been covered. Thanks.
