I didn't really see an introduction thread so I figured I'd post something like that here.
I'm Tessa, 19 years old and I'd like to start game development. I'd had an idea for an MMO but I know it's absurd to try and jump into that spike pit right away.
So my goal for now (I don't expect this to happen soon mind you more like in quite a few years) is to make a 2D turn-based rpg like Chrono trigger or The Legend of Heroes which would be closest to what I'm trying to make just as far as the way the game would work.
I don't have the characters or the storyline ironed out more than general stuff. So I figure it would be better to learn some stuff while I brainstorm ideas and find out what would take too much for me to do etc.
So I'll be lurking about looking for information and such.
Nice to meet everyone.
New to development

Well, all I can say is, welcome to Dev. Ask anything you like, and you're pretty certain to get answers. One thing you'll learn here is that while responses come kind of slow, they're almost always helpful.

2d is a good place to start. Do you know a programming language, or have you chosen one to get started in? Python is a good starting language.
Currently using Blender 2.5, FlashPunk, and Unity.

Python is not only a good language but, as soon as Google's Unladen Swallow project gets some traction, it will probably be a good language to use in general in the future. You'll want to look into the PyGame extension also.
http://www.pygame.org/ and http://www.python.org/ will get you started. (Preferably in that order since PyGame sometimes needs an older version of Python to work.)
